ENG This evening we are going to see the musical 'The phantom of the Opera' by the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber in 'one of the great theatres' of Hamburg.

DEU Heute/diesen Abend werden wir das Musical 'Das Phantom der Oper' des britischen Komponisten Andrew Lloyd Webber in einem großartigen Theater Hamburgs sehen.

Hamburg is most definitely the German capital of musicals. As always there is not enough time to explore all offers, so we opted for the most famous one, the 'Phantom of the Opera' (= lu fantomu du (lu)/d'operu). We are going to see (= en/estun vade a vide) that 'particular' musical this evening (= cu seru), a musical by the 'male' British composer (= do lo komposero britos) Andrew Lloyd Webber in a 'grand' theatre (= in un teatru grandus). On arrival, naturally, we will have a bottle of champagne, some caviar and a lovely banter with our dear friends and actors.

Stori du mortu | Stories of murder

EUL Tam esti multi stori du mortu in cu libru du krimu.

ENG There are plenty stories of murder in this detective book.

DEU Da sind/es gibt viele Mordgeschichten in diesem Kriminalroman.

In cu eksemplu en vide kem Eulingu labore. Tam esti tri parti in cu sentenzu: 'tam esti' (= there 'they' are), 'multi stori du mortu' (= many/plenty stories of murder) i 'in cu libru du krimu' (in this detective book). Li sufiksi koresponde, por eksemplu '-i' (plural) in 'esti multi stori', mas otres '-u' ('neuter' single term) in 'du mortu' (= of 'neuter' murder) i in 'cu libru du krimu' (= this 'neuter' book of 'neuter' crime).

In cu vakanzu | In these holidays

EUL In cu vakanzu en fare kon nu karu a lagu da Bolsena in Italu.

ENG In these holidays we drive with our car to the lake of Bolsena in Italy.

DEU In diesem Urlaub fahren wir mit unserem Auto (unserer Karre) an den Bolsena See in Italien.

This is another example how to include 'cu/ci/ca/co' in our daily conversation, this time when talking about taking vacation and the selected transport and destination. As you can see we opted for the original Italian term 'Bolsena' (instead of the adapted 'Bolsenu' in Eulingu) and transformed the associated 'd-' (of) into 'da' in order to keep consistency with the final '-a' in 'Bolsena'.

La sora i lo frato | The sister and the brother

ENG These people (they) are Rita and Karl. Rita (she) is the sister of Karl and Karl (he) is the brother of Rita.
DEU Diese Leute (sie) sind Rita und Karl. Rita (sie) ist die Schwester von Karl und Karl (er) ist der Bruder von Rita.

In cu eksemplu en fokuse in li sufiksi '-i', '-a' i '-o'. Lu sufiksu '-i' reflekte lu pluralu, kel estut trove in li termi 'ci' (these), 'populi' (plural of 'people') i 'esti' (they are), mas otres in 'i' (and). In 'Rita', 'esta' (she is), 'da' (of the 'female') i 'la sora' (the sister) en vide lu sufiksu '-a' kel reflekte 'termi femis' (female terms). A finu lu sufiksu '-o' represente li 'male terms' in li paroli 'Karlo', 'esto' (he is), 'do' (of the 'male') i 'lo frato' (the brother).

Filmu novus | Can't be silent

EUL Cu seru en vade a kinema i vide lu filmu novus du musiku 'Can't Be Silent'.

ENG This evening we go to the cinema and see the new music movie 'Can't Be Silent'.

DEU Diesen Abend gehen wir ins Kino und schauen den neuen Musikfilm 'Can't Be Silent'.

'They are musicians from Africa, the Balkans and Iran. And since May 2012 they have been touring Germany with songwriter Heinz Ratz and his band Strom und Wasser. What makes this project special is that these musicians are asylum seekers. Throughout the summer we have accompanied them on their journey and followed them with our cameras.

On the stage: young rappers join together with an experienced Jazz pianist, a reggae singer with a German singer-songwriter, an African percussionist with accomplished Roma musicians and a beatboxer with Greek roots. Despite their differences, they gather in a respectful way – meeting each other eye to eye. Their creativity unfolds as they work to develop a common language through music. “I can´t be silent will show this process of convergence: from the wrong notes to the beautiful harmonies, from the stage-fright to the shining moments. We will show the small locations and thunderous applause, the enthusiasm and the grinding routines

Only as the film progresses will the viewers begin to experience the arduous daily lives of the refugees in the group. As the film unfolds, so too will their stories and their experiences of living under the stark statutory requirements attached to their status. Viewers will begin to understand that refugees are not just allowed to travel freely inside Germany, that they have to live with many people in cramped spaces, and that they don't always have a possibility to rehearse or to practice their instrument. They will be asked to contemplate living under the constant threat of deportation and having to put up with the memories of their traumatic experiences coming to Europe. The lives of refugees are precarious and the future more than insecure. But in “I can't be silent”, the musicians are not handled as objects of pity, but will be viewed as strong individuals who express the issues that define their lives through their music...'

In cu citu [in tʃu: tʃi:'tu:]

EUL In cu citu habite multi populi.

ENG In this city live many people.

DEU In dieser Stadt leben viele Menschen.

As seen in previous posts we have opted for the letter 'c' [tʃ] in a few words such as 'cu/ci/ca/co' ('this/these' depending on gender/quantity), also 'citu' and 'centi' (cents) when the letter 'z' did not seem efficient enough, especially with regards to 'etimologu'.

The letter "z" has initially been introduced as a first reaction to the general confusion over the pronunciation of the letter "c", e.g. as 'k' in 'describe' or as 's' in 'produce'. In Eulingu we reflect both terms as 'deskribe" (em deskribe una fema - I describe a woman) and as 'produze' (esto produze jelatu - he produces ice cream).

Nevertheless we have realised that certain reflections would go too far, such as 'zitu' for 'city' or 'zentu' for the European currency 'cent'. Therefore we show flexibility and welcome the beautiful letter 'c' to our inventory:

Ci femi ame lu citu - These women love the city

Gramatiku | Kem i ken a use 'cu', 'ci', 'ca' i 'co'

EUL Es lu museu d'artu modernus. In cu museu tam esti multi artisti. Esta Sara! Ca fema esta una pintera grandas. I esto Romano! Co viro esto uno skribero espanos. Ker habite i labore ci artisti? Ci artisti habite i labore in lu citu espanus Madrid.

ENG This is the museum of modern art. In this museum there (they) are many artists. This is Sarah! This woman (she) is a great painter. And this (he) is Roman! This man (he) is a Spanish writer. Where do these artists live and work? These artists live and work in the Spanish city of Madrid.

DEU Das ist das Museum der modernen Kunst. In diesem Museum (dort) gibt es viele Artisten. Das ist Sarah! Diese Frau (sie) ist eine gross(artig)e Malerin. Und das ist Roman! Dieser Mann (er) ist ein spanischer Schriftsteller. Wo leben und arbeiten diese Künstler/Artisten? Diese Artisten/Künstler leben und arbeiten in der spanischen Stadt Madrid.
