Li avi - The birds

EUL A seru estun vise lu filmu 'Li avi' d'Alfred Hitchcock.
ENG This evening we watch the movie 'The birds' by Alfred Hitchcock.

The Birds is a 1963 suspense/horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, loosely based on the 1952 story "The Birds" by Daphne du Maurier. It depicts Bodega Bay, California, which is, suddenly and for unexplained reasons, the subject of a series of widespread and violent bird attacks over the course of a few days.

 

The film was billed as 'introducing' Tippi Hedren. It also starred Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and a young Veronica Cartwright.

 

The screenplay was written by Evan Hunter. Hitchcock told him to develop new characters and a more elaborate plot, keeping Du Maurier's title and concept of unexplained bird attacks.

A matinu - In the morning

EUL A matinu em manje un panu krispus kon bur i marmeladu i beve un tasu d'teu irus.
ENG In the morning I eat a crispy bread roll with butter and jam and drink a cup of Irish tea.

Nothing beats a proper breakfast in the morning ('a matinu') before we set out to do 'some damage' in the rest of the day. We have opted for a freshly baked bread roll ('un panu krispus'), together with butter and jam ('bur i marmeladu') and a nice cup of Irish tea ('un tasu d'teu irus'), feel free to add a little 'uisce beatha' if on vacation.

 

The two verbs 'manje' ('eat') and 'beve' ('drink') both carry the active '-e'. While 'manje' is modelled on French 'manger' and Italian 'mangiare' (although we exchanged the 'g' for a 'j' [dʒ] due to our 'reglu' of 'sound over spelling'), the second action 'beve' finds its reflection in English 'beverage', Spanish/Portuguese 'beber' and Italian 'bevuta'.

Un fonu mobilus novus - A new mobile phone

EUL Em habe un fonu mobilus novus.

Today I was searching for a new mobile phone when I realised that my 'cherry points' were enough to cover the purchase of my new phone ('fonu mobilus novus'). Apart from being thankful I am totally convinced that going forward I will keep my phone bill to a minimum...lol. :-)

Porku d'Wellington - Pork Wellington

EUL A seru em kuke 'Porku d'Wellington' in mu kozinu, kon verdi fritis i jus d'vinu rojus i beve un biru italus.
ENG This evening I cook 'Pork Wellington' in my kitchen with fried greens and red wine jus and drink an Italian beer.
DEU Heute abend koche ich 'Pork Wellington' in meiner Kueche, mit fritiertem Gemuese und Rotweinsauce und trinke ein italienisches Bier.

There is nothing like a good meal, especially one that is home cooked with fresh ingredients from your local butcher, veggie man and wine merchant. We decided to go for 'Pork Wellington' together with fried vegetables (parsnips, carrots, mushrooms, onions & garlic). Also, there is red wine jus on the side and for drinks we opted for a lovely Italian beer called 'Peroni' (a long time favourite).

Well(ington), while the dinner is roasting away in the oven, let's have a quick look at what we came up with today in Eulingu. A pretty long sentence we have to admit. The intro 'a seru' (this evening) goes well with 'a tagu' (this day/today) and 'a matinu' (this morning). The action 'em kuke' (I cook) is a good description of general activities in my kitchen (in mu kozinu) while sipping away Italian beer ('beve biru italus'). As a side dish the vegetables are fried in a pan ('verdi fritis'), the gravy is a slowly cooked reduction of red wine ('jus d'vinu rojus') and plenty of flavours.

Lu problemu - The problem

All question words in Eulingu start with the letter 'k', e.g. 'kes' (what), 'ker' (where), 'ken' (when), 'kel' (which), 'ku/ki/ka/ko' ('who' depending on gender), 'kem' (how), 'por kes' (why), 'kem multi' (how many) and 'kem multu' (how much).

 

The active 'es' (short for 'estu') corresponds to both the question word 'kes' (what) and the singular 'lu problemu' (the problem), with 'estu' (it is) being the medium of the triangle. Problemu? Tam es nul problemu!

Pluvi in Iru - Rain in Ireland

Let's split the sentence into three little pieces: 1) 'a tagu' (today), 2) 'es pluve multes' (it rains heavily) and 3) 'in Iru' (in Ireland). While 1) and 3) are pretty straight forward, 'es pluve multes' needs further clarification.

All three words contain the letter 'e' representing 'action', es (short for 'estu' - it is), the verb 'pluve' (rains/is raining) and the adverb 'multes' (very much/heavily).

Anka visite Paskalo - Anka visits Pascal

EUL Anka parle kon so amiko dobros Paskalo kel visite-sa in un kafu trendus.
ENG Anka chats with her good friend Pascal who visits her in a trendy cafe.
DEU Anka spricht mit ihrem guten Freund Paskal, der sie in einem trendy Cafe besucht.

 

There are two things we like to highlight in the above sentence. Part I, the consistency of the final vowel 'o' in 'so amiko dobros Paskalo'. As 'Paskalo' is masculine (-o), all related words (s- amik- dobr-s) correspond in a similar way.

 

Part II, the compound 'visite-sa' and why we need a hyphen. The actual structure would be 'visite sa amika' but we skip the 'amika' and align 'sa' with the active 'visite' through the hyphen (so is does not feel lonely and left out).

Tri ministori - Three ministers

EUL Tam esti tri ministori d'kabinetu kel debate un kasu politikus.
ENG There are three cabinet ministers which/who debate a political case.
DEU Da sind drei Kabinettsminister, welche/die eine politische Angelegenheit debatieren.

It really took us some time to figure out the reflection for 'there is/are' in Eulingu. But, after looking at Slavic languages we had our answer in the form of 'tam estu/esti' (there is/are) with 'tam' being the equivalent of 'there'.

Li lingi europis - The European languages

EUL Estun guste multes li multi lingi europis.
ENG We very much like the many European languages.
DEU Wir mögen die vielen europäischen Sprachen sehr gerne.

 

Apart from our passion for European languages we like to focus on the structure of the above 'sentenzu' in Eulingu. Partly the active 'estun guste' (we like), but more importantly on both variations of 'mult-' (plural), once the quality adverb 'multes' (very much) but also the quantity adjective 'multi' (many).

Both align beautifully with their associated and respective counterparts, 'multes' with 'guste' (just watch the elegant active 'e') and 'multi' with 'lingi' (keep an eye on that foxy plural 'i'), while following Eulingu's structure of 'kvantitu-termu-kvalitu'.

Finally, comparing the length of all three sentences, Eulingu wins by a mile...offering clarity, simplicity and efficiency at the same time.

Habemus Papam - Estun habe uno Papo novos kon lu nomu simplus Franzisko



Anunzu d'Vatikanu:

 

'Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam: Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Georgium Marium Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Bergoglio qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum...'

Well, in plain Eulingu we would say "estun habe uno Papo novos" (we have a new Pope) because that's what we 'have'. So, let us enjoy the moment and do not think about 'gramatiku', vocabulary and style.

Fum negrus - Black smoke

Despite the importance of selecting a new pope leading the catholic faith, we like to focus - for a second - our worldly eyes on the 'neuter -u'. Consistency plays a crucial part in the development of Eulingu, but - of course - we do not want to overdo it:

Therefore 'fum' and 'result' only carry one 'u', as the final syllable already consists of a 'u'. It is a different story with 'votu', 'konklavu' and 'Vatikanu'.
